  • Recipient of the ABA James Keane Memorial Award for Excellence in ELawyering

    I’m excited and honored to announce that I have received the 2009 ABA James I. Keane Memorial Award for Excellence in eLawyering.  From the ABA’s Law Practice Management website:

    “The James I. Keane Memorial Award gives recognition to law offices or legal organizations that have developed legal service innovations delivered over the Internet. Thus, the focus of the award is the innovative delivery of personal legal services, with special attention given to firms and entities that serve both moderate income individuals and the broad middle class.” 

    The James I. Keane Memorial Award will be presented during the annual ABA TECHSHOW in Chicago following the keynote presentation by author Richard Susskind.  A description of my virtual law practice will also appear in the ABA’s Law Practice Magazine and other ABA Law Practice Management Publications. 

    For the past three years, I have operated my web-based virtual law office (VLO), Kimbro Legal Services, LLC, in North Carolina providing estate planning and small business assistance online to clients state-wide.  The Keane Award is recognition for this work, and I can’t express how grateful I am to be this year’s recipient.  I hope that my VLO encourages other attorneys to consider virtual law practice either as a completely web-based system or to add some component of technology to their law practices that will allow them to provide more accessible and affordable legal services to the public.

  • ABA’s Excellence in Elawyering Award Accepting Nominations

    The ABA’s eLawyering Task Force has announced that it is accepting nominations for The James I. Keane Memorial Award.  This annual award gives recognition to law offices or legal organizations that have developed legal service innovations delivered over the Internet.  According to the Task Force, the focus of the award is the innovative delivery of personal legal services, with special attention given to firms and entities that serve both moderate income individuals and the broad middle class.

    “The Jim Keane Award is named for James I. Keane, the founding Chair of the ABA eLawyering Task Force. The Task Force was created in 2000, when ABA President William G. Paul, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, took the unusual and creative step of asking a Section to assume responsibility for one of his presidential initiatives, namely an examination of ways that lawyers could use the Internet and other electronic resources to deliver legal services to people of moderate means more efficiently and effectively.”

  • Virtual Law Office Voted Family Favorite

    I need to brag for a minute. I am proud to announce that for the second year in a row my virtual law practice was voted the Family Favorite by the readers of the Wilmington Parent Magazine. The publication is a local parenting magazine that covers several major counties across the southeastern coast of North Carolina.

    Most of my estate planning clients have young families and many of my small business clients are parents, including a number of work-at-home mothers. Of any career-related accolades, this one makes me the proudest because it means that my clients think enough of my legal services to take the time to vote for me and send in the survey to the publication — without my asking, I might add. The fixed fees and the convenience of working with an attorney online are the biggest selling points for my virtual practice based on client feedback. Here’s looking forward to another strong year with my virtual practice!
